Population

The San Luis Obispo-Paso Robles-Arroyo Grande Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 105,690 in 1970 to 269,637 in 2010. That was an increase of 155.1 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 5,319 in 1970 to 29,935 in 2010. That was an increase of 462.8 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 5.0 percent to 11.1 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 138.8 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the primary factor in adding population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NDM remained the principal factor in added population in all periods.
